About the property

The building combines historic character with significant commercial and pedestrian activity, an important part of the city’s ongoing regeneration and economic growth.

History
The Royal Buildings began life as the Royal Hotel, part of a late Georgian set piece designed by the architect Robert Wallace and built between 1837 and 1839 on the corner of Corn Market and the newly created Victoria Street.
1837
Markeaton Brook, which ran through the centre of Derby, is covered with a brick culvert. The new street laid above it has been named Victoria Street by 1841.
1837–1839
Robert Wallace is chosen from 52 entries to design a group of buildings on the corner: a hotel, the Athenaeum and a Post Office. The Athenaeum offers a newsroom stocked with some 18 newspapers and journals, and houses the town’s new museum.
1839
The hotel is completed in a grand classical style, in stone and stucco, with a curved corner framed by Greek Ionic half-columns and a royal coat of arms. It soon becomes Derby’s leading hotel for visitors and a popular venue for public celebrations.
1869
The Post Office leaves the corner for new premises at Victoria Street and St James’ Street.
1951
The Royal Hotel closes to guests, and the building is adapted for shops and other commercial uses.
1977
The former Royal Hotel is added to the National Heritage List for England at Grade II in February 1977.
